They should teach the skills of building your own house in school. Think of how much debt could be avoided.
Modern day zoning is indeed a bit overkill. But to abolish zoning all together is outrageous. Special development relaxations can be added into the development act with a simple amendment. If you allow economics to dictate how your city is built you are giving too much power to private stakeholders who in turn have the power to control land value, and dictate community identity. If you think the government is bad you have no idea what private interests could do. I find it ironic when people in the comment section are raving about capitalism and how they are being taken advantage of when this system of Laissez faire economics used by Houstin is the very foundation on which capitalism was built. There should be compromises to current zoning but having none is really, really not a good idea. We can do better than either extreme people.
I think it’s great that we have one city with such a free zoning like Houston. It’s a great contrast to the over regulating cities like NYC and San Fran.
Thing need to change to the times and need for the people, is the government for for the people governed by the people?
